Blue Moon Time Lapse

A Blue Moon comes around once every few years, but it falls on New Years Eve only every quarter century or so. New Years Eve 2009 was one of those rare occurrences. Since I knew I would have a great view of the moon over the water all evening while celebrating–overlooking Moreton Bay and the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron–I figured it would be a good chance to try my first real experiment with night-time time lapse photos.

It was very much a case of just set it up and let it run. One of the great things about time lapse is that once it’s running, it doesn’t require any attention; in fact, once started, attention is a bad thing!

The light in the sky going from left to right at the beginning is a plane heading off down to Sydney or Melbourne (Brisbane airport is to the left, off-frame). The light moving around on the water is a boat near the channel to the harbor. The lights clustered at the bottom right of the frame are in the marina at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.
