This, believe it or not, is a major lake. Just northeast of the Australian capital city of Canberra, it’s a good indication of the kind of drought pretty much the entire continent is suffering. Since 1989 the water level has been falling until it is now almost entirely dry. Rains from time to time add a watery surface sheen, but it’s going to take an awful lot of rain over a very long time to really break the drought–something that’s true for a surprisingly large portion of the continent. The clouds in this clip are just a tease. And the wind turbines in the distance on the far bank are an indication of the breeze that funnels through on a fairly consistent basis.
