As with all the previous GoPros, the HERO10 Black is set up with automatic settings that work well in many situations right out of the box.

GoPro HERO10 Deals

GoPro has released the HERO10 Black. The MSRP is $499, but GoPro is currently running some great deals:

And with the new model out, it's a great time to pick up a deal on the HERO9 Black. You can get it for $349 with a free spare battery, a 32GB SD card, and a 1-year GoPro subscription. More details here.

But the Black editions are GoPro’s flagship models, and they’re geared to photographers and videographers who might want more control over the camera. So, like the Black editions before it, the HERO10 Black also has a suite of advanced, or expert, settings that you can use to finetune your settings for shooting video and photos (or, for that matter, time-lapse).

GoPro calls this category of advanced settings Protune. They give you more direct control over things like shutter speed and white balance and the audio track.

The HERO10 Black uses the same method of accessing the Protune settings that was first introduced with the HERO8 Black. With older models, you first had to turn on the Protune switch before any of the Protune options became visible.

The new approach handles settings a bit differently. You now change the shooting settings more directly through capture mode presets. When you go into changing the shooting preset settings, you can just scroll down to see the more advanced Protune options. It’s a method that makes far more sense to me, and I see it as an improvement over the old way of doing things.

The settings themselves are very similar to those of previous models–as you can see from the lists below, the only differences are minor tweaks.

So here are master lists of the Protune options available when shooting video footage and photos with the HERO10 Black.

* Note on manual shutter: The specific options available in the manual exposure / shutter section vary by the framerate you've chosen. The available shutter speeds you'll see available will be limited to multiples of the framerate you're using. As an example, if you set it to record at 1080p60, you won't see the option for a manual shutter speed of 1/96 but you will see 1/120 and 1/240. In general, the scale goes 1/fps, 1/(2xfps), 1/(4xfps), 1(8xfps), and 1(16xfps).

* The shutter settings were added to the HERO5 Black with a firmware update in April 2017 (v.02.00).

Things Worth Knowing

There are other settings that fall outside the Protune collection but are nevertheless important. Two examples are the options for shooting HEVC or H.264 video as well as the choice between RAW and JPG photos. Both of those are found under general preferences.
