If something’s gone wrong with your GoPro HERO10 Black so that it won’t turn on, or if you’re selling it or lending it to a friend, you might need to reset the camera.

GoPro HERO10 Deals

GoPro has released the HERO10 Black. The MSRP is $499, but GoPro is currently running some great deals:

And with the new model out, it's a great time to pick up a deal on the HERO9 Black. You can get it for $349 with a free spare battery, a 32GB SD card, and a 1-year GoPro subscription. More details here.

There are a few different types of reset on the HERO10 Black. First, there’s a factory reset. There’s basically the nuclear option: it wipes everything and restores it to the settings it comes with out of the box. But there are also some other more selective reset options that might be useful for solving specific problems.

So here’s a rundown of how to reset a GoPro HERO10 Black.

How to Do a Factory Reset on the HERO10 Black

This will set your HERO10 back to square one. It will delete all your custom presets, wireless connections, and any other settings you’ve changed. But it will not roll back the firmware to the original version or delete the data on your memory card.

This is the nuclear option that clears everything. Before you do this, know that it’s going to wipe all of your settings and custom presets. It will clear all the wireless connections and deregister your HERO10 Black from your GoPro account. It will not delete anything off your SD card (but you can remove it if you like), and it doesn’t roll back the camera’s firmware to an earlier version.

  1. On the camera’s back screen, swipe down to bring up the Dashboard shortcut menu. Then swipe from right to left and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Preferences > Reset > Factory Reset

How to Restore Presets to Defaults on the HERO10 Black

This is going to set the shooting presets back to the factory defaults, and it’s going to wipe any custom presets you had set.

Like the previous couple of models before it, the HERO10 Black has a feature that lets you set custom shooting presets. If you’ve been experimenting with different shooting combinations and they’ve gotten messed up, here’s how to reset them back to the defaults.

  1. On the camera’s back screen, swipe down to bring up the Dashboard shortcut menu. Then swipe from right to left and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Preferences > Reset > Reset Presets

How to Reset a GoPro HERO10 Black’s Wireless Connections

This will wipe all wireless connection data from the camera, including any wifi network passwords you’ve entered or Bluetooth device connections.

You can reset all of the HERO10 Black’s wireless connections by:

  1. On the camera’s back screen, swipe down to bring up the Dashboard shortcut menu. Then swipe from right to left and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Preferences > Connections > Reset Connections

How to Reset the Camera Tips

This will restore those annoying helpful camera tips that pop up on the back screen to explain what settings do.

The camera tips are the little help suggestions that pop up when you’re accessing some features and settings. They can be helpful at first, but once you’ve gotten to know your way around the camera, they can become an annoyance. So you can turn them off (something I’ve written about here). But if you want to turn them back on for some reason, here’s how you do it:

  1. On the camera’s back screen, swipe down to bring up the Dashboard shortcut menu. Then swipe from right to left and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Preferences > Reset > Reset Camera Tips

How to Format SD Card in the HERO10 Black

This will wipe the memory card or all photos and video and set it up with the standard GoPro folders. So make sure you’ve downloaded or backed up everything you want to keep from the card before hitting reset.

For the sake of completeness, I’ll mention this since GoPro has put it under the Reset menu category too. It’s for formatting the memory card. While I can see how it makes logical sense to put the card formatting under the resetting category, it’s not necessarily the first place I’d look for it.

I have a much more detailed post on using SD cards in the GoPro HERO10 Black, but here’s the short version for formatting:

  1. On the camera’s back screen, swipe down to bring up the Dashboard shortcut menu. Then swipe from right to left and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to Preferences > Reset > Format SD Card

If you’ve accidentally deleted everything but need to restore deleted photos or videos, it might still be possible to recover them, even after formatting the card. I’ve put together a guide to the data recovery options from an SD card.

How to Restart Your GoPro HERO10 Black

This restarts the camera, but it doesn’t change or reset any of the camera’s settings.

This doesn’t change any settings, but it can be a useful first step in troubleshooting if your HERO10 has frozen (something I’ve found happens far too often with GoPros of just about any model). If your GoPro isn’t responding, this is the first thing to try:

  1. Press and hold the Mode button for 10 seconds. The Mode button is the one on the side, also known as the power button. So long as there’s enough charge in the battery, this should restart (or reboot) the camera.

If that doesn’t work—and sometimes I’ve found that it doesn’t—try taking the battery out and putting it back in.
