Protune Options of the GoPro HERO8 Black

Here are master lists of the Protune options available when shooting video and photos with the HERO8 Black.

As with all the previous GoPros, the HERO8 Black is set up with automatic settings that work well in many situations right out of the box. But like the flagship Black editions before it, there are also advanced, or expert, settings that you can use to finetune your shooting with video and photo. GoPro calls this category of settings Protune. They give you more direct control over things like shutter speed and white balance.

The biggest change in the Protune settings of the HERO8 Black isn’t to do with different settings. It’s with how they’re accessed. With older models, you first had to turn on the Protune switch before any of the Protune options became visible. The new model handles settings a bit differently. You now change the shooting settings through capture mode presets. You can change the settings for those presets, and within that the Protune options are now more directly available.

Get the GoPro HERO8 Black for $299.98

With the new HERO9 Black just released, GoPro is running a great deal on the previous model, the HERO8 Black. You can get it for $299.98, and that includes a 1-year subscription to GoPro as well as a 32GB SD card.

The subscription to GoPro gives you unlimited cloud storage, discounted no-questions-asked camera replacement, and up to 50% off GoPro accessories.

You can find the deal at GoPro.com.

The settings themselves are very similar to those of previous models. Here are master lists of the Protune options available when shooting video and photos with the HERO8 Black.

* Note on manual shutter: The specific options available in the manual exposure / shutter section vary by the framerate you've chosen. The available shutter speeds you'll see available will be limited to multiples of the framerate you're using. As an example, if you set it to record at 1080p60, you won't see the option for a manual shutter speed of 1/96 but you will see 1/120 and 1/240. In general, the scale goes 1/fps, 1/(2xfps), 1/(4xfps), 1(8xfps), and 1(16xfps).
