The GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip

The GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip combines several different options for easily attaching your GoPro to a variety of places on the go.

The GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip a versatile go-anywhere clip that lets you attach your camera to a whole bunch of different things. The main plates of the clip are made of metal, so they’re quite strong and rigid.

Even with the weight of a camera on top, you can use it freestanding on flat, horizontal surfaces. If the surface works with the magnet, you can obviously get more leeway on the amount of tilt.

Deal: GoPro HERO9 Black Bundle

GoPro is running a deal on the new HERO9 Black, their newest and best camera. It's a bundle that includes the HERO9 Black, a 1-year subscription to GoPro, a Magnetic Swivel Clip, a spare battery, a Floating Hand Grip, and a 32GB SD card. It's all for $399.98.

It swivels through 360 degrees laterally, which is handy if you’re just trying to tweak the shooting perspective or want to swing it around for a selfie shot.

The swivel mechanism is mounted atop a light-duty spring-clamp clip. It has flat jaws that are lined with rubberized ridges to add grip.

The ridged teeth are rubberized, so won’t scratch surfaces. But it doesn’t open very wide–to grip to larger items you’ll need to step up to something beefier, like the Jaws Clamp.

The bottom base plate of the clip is a magnet. So you can attach it to flat metal surfaces. It’s also long enough that it will stand freely without tipping over (within reason).

GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip

The magnet is decent, but it’s not especially strong, and I wouldn’t trust it anywhere that risks the camera flying off, like the hood of a car (for that, I’ve used these ones by MagWheels successfully many times).

The spring is reasonably strong and provides good grip.

What It Does

The key concept with determining what this is good for is: “within reason.” The magnet is reasonably strong; the jaws’ spring is reasonably strong; and the rotating friction is reasonably strong. But this is essentially a light-duty mounting option. It’s a great option to have for knock-around shooting because it gives you a bunch of options for attaching your GoPro to things. But it’s not a heavy-duty option, and I wouldn’t use it skydiving or on the handlebars of a bike. Even kayaking or boating, there’s a high risk of it getting bumped loose, so you’d be best adding a tether or at least some kind of float.

The spring is quite strong, so it gives a pretty secure grip (again, within reason).

The rotating part is the clip on the top. It’s hardwired on, so it’s designed not to unscrew, either intentionally or unintentionally. It’s held in place with friction, which is again reasonably strong within reason. But with the weight of the camera on it, it can move around a little with fast, whippy movement. But then, the whole clip is not designed to be strong enough for that kind of movement anyway. I wouldn’t use this clip on the handlebars of a bike, for instance—there are much better and more secure options for that.

But for lighter duty, such as hiking or traveling or general everyday use, it offers a lot of flexibility for mounting your GoPro very quickly in unusual places.

A feature I particularly like about this one is its low profile. It hardly takes up any space in your travel kit, but more importantly, because the camera attaches directly to it, it makes it a tighter, less wobbly connection. Some of the other alternatives add a ball clip on top or an extra mechanism to do the rotation. That makes the whole thing taller and less stable. But keeping things low-profile helps with stability.

Compatibility

The Magnetic Swivel Clip uses the usual GoPro three-pronged attachment system. So it’s compatible with any GoPro or any other camera that uses that attachment system. If you’re using it with a different camera, you’ll need to factor in the weight of the camera–heavier cameras might not free stand and might attach less securely.

What’s in the Box?

There are three parts to it. The main part is the clip/clamp.

It also comes with a quick release clip (and one of the good GoPro ones, not one of the cheaper, flimsier knock-off versions).

And there’s the usual GoPro locking bolt.

GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip

It comes with the swivel clip, a quick-release clip, and a bolt.

Alternatives to the Magnetic Swivel Clip

I haven’t come across any aftermarket alternatives that combine these particular features of a swivel clip and magnet. But there are some good alternatives for individual components.

If you’re after a magnet mount–and a much stronger one, at that–I’ve used these ones by MagWheels many times and found them to work well. But be warned: they really are strong, and you’ll need to consider the surface you’re putting it on.

If all you’re looking to do is rotate the camera, GoPro has a Ball Joint Buckle that uses the standard GoPro quick clip buckle. There are also third-party variations like this one or this one.

There are also plenty of clips available with varying degrees of strength. Here’s one simple, inexpensive option. For something much stronger (and much bulkier), the Jaws clamps work well.

GoPro News & Deals

New Smart Remote GoPro will be announcing the new Smart Remote for the HERO9 Black on December 17, 2020. The HERO9 Black isn’t compatible with the previous version of the Smart Remote.

HERO8 Black firmware v2.0 now available. Enables webcam mode; enables Display Mod compatibility; expands HyperSmooth 2.0 High and Boost availability to more video settings; general bug fixes. Update through the mobile app or manually.

GoPro Launches New Live Streaming Service for GoPro PLUS. GoPro has launched their own live-streaming platform for PLUS subscribers. It’s a pretty bare-bones offering for now, with livestreams shared with a dedicated URL. This is alongside their efforts to make the HERO8 Black useful as a webcam when connected to a computer (via USB plug-in-play, not requiring the Media Mod accessory with HDMI out). New firmware adds that functionality for Mac users, and the Windows version is in Beta.

New GoPro Zeus Mini Video Light. GoPro has released released a new video LED light designed to complement their GoPro cameras. It’s tiny, waterproof, and has a built-in magnetic swiveling clip. It’s waterproof down to 33 feet (10 meters), has four levels of brightness, and includes a diffuser to cool the color temperature to 5000K. GoPro claims that the built-in battery lasts up to 6 hours (presumably at the lowest brightness setting, although they don’t specify). It’s available now and priced at $69.99.

DJI Osmo Action firmware update adds live streaming. DJI has released a firmware update for the Osmo Action (v. 01.08.00.10) that adds live streaming support, so you can upload directly to platforms like Facebook and YouTube (it goes through the DJI Mimo mobile app). They’ve also improved the in-camera video stabilization. You can find the new firmware here.

New Underwater Housing for GoPro HERO8 Black from Isotta. Isotta, an Italian brand specializing in underwater housings, has announced a new high-quality underwater housing for the HERO8 Black. It’s an aluminum housing depth-rated to 650 feet (200 meters), has a one-handed open/close switch, double o-rings, and can be used with filters. There’s also a dual-handled tray to go along with it. And like all their housings, it’s in their distinctive red. Priced at $450, it’s only for those who need a highly specialized piece of underwater kit. It’s available for preorder from underwater specialists Backscatter.

Light Mod Now Shipping The Light Mod, one of the three new GoPro accessories, is now shipping. It’s a standalone light that is waterproof, rechargeable and compatible with all GoPro mounts. It was originally announced along with the HERO8 Black, but it hasn’t been available until now. It’s priced at $49.99, and you can find them at GoPro.com.

GoPro MAX Now Shipping. The new 360° camera, the MAX, is now shipping.

GoPro HERO8 Black and Max Unveiled. The new GoPro cameras and accessories have been unveiled. I have a rundown of the highlights of the HERO8 Black here.

DJI Osmo Action vs GoPro HERO7 Black. I’ve posted my detailed hands-on comparison of the Osmo Action and the HERO7 Black. There’s a lot similar between the models, but once you start digging down into the details there are differences that can help in choosing between them. And each has strengths the other doesn’t have. You can find my review here.

GoPro HyperSmooth vs DJI RockSteady. The new DJI Osmo Action also has built-in electronic stabilization to smooth out video. They’re calling it RockSteady (GoPro has HyperSmooth). I’ve been out testing them side-by-side. You can see the results here.

GoPro Deals page. I’ve put together a dedicated page on GoPro deals. So if you’re looking for cheap GoPro deals, check it out.

DJI Osmo action 4K Camera. Best known for their camera drones, DJI has released a new 4K action cam that’s taking direct aim at the GoPro HERO7 Black. It shoots up to 4K60 video and 12MP stills, includes electronic stabilization, has high-dynamic range video at 4K30, voice commands, a touchscreen on the back and another smaller live view screen on the front, and is waterproof down to 36 feet (11 meters). It’s priced at $349, and they’re now available at B&H Photo.
