How many USB devices do you use? How many external hard drives, printers, scanners, camera chargers, and card readers? Chances are, it’s many more than the number of USB ports you have on your computer. For a long time I’ve found that using one or more USB hubs is a necessity.
Inateck’s new portable 7-port USB hub adds a slimline option to the mix. It’s definitely sleeker and more stylish than your average utilitarian USB hub, with its machined aluminum case looking like it was carved out of a Macbook Pro.
The seven ports are lined up along one edge. The power supply and USB cable plug into one end.
It supports USB 3.0 as well as USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. You don’t need to install any drivers–just plug it in and it works. And despite the Apple styling, it works just as well on Windows PCs as on Macs.
It comes with a ribbon cable and power supply. Unfortunately, the power supply is pretty bulky–much bulkier than the hub itself–which isn’t much a problem if you’re tucking it under your desk but doesn’t make it ideal for portability.
In terms of performance, it does what a USB hub is supposed to do–it multiplies the number of USB devices you can plug in simultaneously. But it looks good doing it. And if you’re trying to keep a desk and workspace uncluttered, that can actually matter.
