Have you ever been frustrated with the way Mac tries to open something you don’t want when you connect a camera or memory reader to the computer? The free Cameras preference pane comes to the rescue. It’s one of those basic features that you wish was just baked into OSX. Not only can it remove a frustration, but it can help make your workflow more efficient by eliminating some small but unnecessary steps that should be easily automated.
Once installed, it’s very simple to use. You get a list of the image devices you’ve connected to the computer and can choose what software opens for each. I prefer to use Photo Mechanic when sorting through the large numbers of images from my DSLRs, but for snapshots from point-and-shoots and my iPhone when I don’t need sophisticated sorting or metadata options, I’d just prefer it get downloaded automatically using the OSX image ingest feature.
