Nikon D7500 Photos

A collection of sample images I've shot with the D7500 to give a sense of how it performs under real-world shooting conditions.

The new Nikon D7500 has a 20.9MP CMOS sensor that produces images up to 5568 x 3712 pixels. It uses a cropped sensor, or DX sensor as Nikon calls them. So to convert the lens focal length from the cropped DX to the equivalent of a 35mm full-frame focal length, you multiply it by 1.5x. For example, if it says in a caption that the photo was taken at 300mm, that’s the practical equivalent of a 450mm focal length in full-frame terms.

It has an ISO sensitivity range from 100 up through 51,200. There are also extended ranges that go up to ISO 1638400, although the image quality deteriorates markedly and its practical uses are limited. I’ve posted some examples at various ISOs separately.

It shoots in JPG and RAW (NEF) filetypes, with a range of settings for each for each, including 12-bit and 14-bit lossless compressed NEF.

So here’s a collection of sample images I’ve shot with the D7500 to give a sense of how it performs under real-world shooting conditions. They were mostly shot in RAW (NEF), and most have been only lightly processed in Lightroom. A few of them have had somewhat more done to them in post-processing or use a flash with color gels, and I’ve noted those in the captions.

High-Resolution Sample Images Taken with a Nikon D7500

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 450 at ¹⁄₆₀ sec at f/2.8. This was using an on-camera flash zoomed in with a red gel to add a pop of color to the rockets. The overall white balance was then shifted a little towards the incandescent end to give the blue cast to the daylight illumination in the background. The flash was a Nikon SB-5000 with a red gel.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 20 mm. ISO 100 at ¹⁄₅₀ sec at f/2.8. This is a shot I often take when testing cameras in part because the soft falloff of the light from right to left is a good test of smooth tones.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 24 mm f/1.4 lens at 24 mm. ISO 1400 at ¹⁄₄₀ sec at f/1.8.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 400 at ¹⁄₆₀ sec at f/2.8. This is the combination of on-camera flash with a red gel (a Yongnuo YN560 IV with a MagMod red gel and MagSphere) and shofting the overall white balance a little towards the red in order to introduce the green/blue cast to the background.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 1800 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/2.8.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 18-300 mm f/3.5-6.3 lens at 300 mm. ISO 320 at ¹⁄₅₀₀ sec at f/11. This is more a test of the lens than the camera, but I included it mainly as an example using another common lens to pair with this camera.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 450 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/2.8. An example where the tilting back screen with live view came in handy to give something a little more interesting than the default straight on look.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 65 mm. ISO 200 at ¹⁄₁₀₀ sec at f/6.3.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 100 at ¹⁄₂₀₀ sec at f/8.0.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 110 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/10.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 100 at ¹⁄₃₀ sec at f/2.8. Again, the default rendering is quite a lot cooler than I’d typically go for. I’d normally warm this up by about 500K, which mightn’t sound like a lot but in a shot like this makes the difference between the blue-gray tint to a more realistic and natural warmer color in the bricks and columns.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 22 mm. ISO 110 at ¹⁄₃₀ sec at f/2.8. The Auto WB made this a little cooler than this version because of the tungsten lights on the shuttle body; I overrode it to cool it down in this case.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 18-300 mm f/3.5-6.3 lens at 90 mm. ISO 110 at ¹⁄₁₆₀ sec at f/5.3.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 19 mm. ISO 280 at ¹⁄₃₀ sec at f/2.8. This is messing with manual white balance, in this case cooling it down to around 2700K that would normally balance incandescent lighting.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 250 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/2.8. I liked how it handled the smooth gradations here from highlight to shadow.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 20 mm. ISO 560 at ¹⁄₆₀ sec at f/4.5. An on-camera flash with a red gel and white balance dialed down lower.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 80 mm. ISO 5600 at ¹⁄₁₂₅ sec at f/5.6. Another high-ISO with smooth tones test shot.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 320 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/2.8. This is a hard one for the camera to meter in matrix mode, but it did well even though most of the frame is pretty heavy shadow.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 65 mm. ISO 6400 at ¹⁄₁₀₀ sec at f/4.0. A good test of high ISO with smooth tones.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 62 mm. ISO 280 at ¹⁄₁₀₀ sec at f/4.0. It’s the lens, not the camera, but you can see quite heavy barrel distortion in the columns.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 360 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/2.8.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 31 mm. ISO 4000 at ¹⁄₅₀ sec at f/3.2. This is far from ideal light to hand-hold, but the combination of high-ISO performance and lens VR amkes it quite doable. And even with Auto WB, it camera out with pretty much the color that it appeared to the naked eye.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 26 mm. ISO 100 at ¹⁄₆₄₀ sec at f/8.0. This is a good example of the overall coolness the camera seems to favor under a lot of conditions. It’s easy to fix–especially since I’m shooting RAW–but by default the shots often come out cooler than I prefer. It also looks a little underexposed to me (matrix metering with 0 EV exposure compensation).

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 3200 at ¹⁄₃₂₀ sec at f/2.8. At ISO 3200 the images are still very usable with very fine noise/grain.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 34 mm. ISO 100 at ¹⁄₂₅₀₀ sec at f/3.3. There’s not much special about the photo, but with all the fine detail at the edges of the frame, it is useful for looking at the combination of camera and lens sharpness at a wide aperture. Also, to my eyes, it’s slightly underexposed, and that’s confirmed in the histogram. It was shot with matrix metering and no exposure compensation (ie. 0 EV).

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 640 at ¹⁄₆₀ sec at f/4.5. This is not exactly how it came out of the camera. It’s had some clarity slider applied in Lightroom and desaturated. An on-camera flash with a red gel just popping at low power is what created the reddish tint in the foreground.

Photo taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens at 16 mm. ISO 3600 at ¹⁄₂₅ sec at f/2.8. Another shot that leans heavily on the high-ISO performance along with the lens VR to make a hand-held shot at least viable.
