Sony a7iii Photos

Here are some sample photos I've taken with the Sony a7iii mirrorless camera to give a sense of how it performs under real-world shooting conditions.

Having been shooting with it for a while now, it doesn’t surprise me one bit that the Sony a7iii has come right out of the gate as a very popular camera. It’s a full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera with a 24MP sensor, and it’s competitively priced.

It looks an feels like a slightly simplified version of the flagship a7riii, but it comes at a very impressive sub-$2000 price point (you can find the latest prices of the various configurations here). After shooting with it for a while, I’ve found the a7iii to be very much a worthy addition to Sony’s Alpha line, with excellent performance and handling.

I’m posting these photos here in the hope that they’re useful in giving a sense of how the camera performs in real-world shooting. I’ve tried to include a mix of lighting conditions, exposure settings, and subjects. I’ve also included shots taken with several different lenses. In other words, the type of thing you might come across in travel photography. I’ve not included any studio setups, and they’re all natural light–no BYO lighting.

Most of these were shot in RAW. They were processed in Lightroom, but because the point of this is to show the performance of the camera, most of these have only been edited lightly, without fancy filters or processing. I’ve used the camera profiles rather than the Adobe profiles, although I tend to prefer the results from the Adobe profiles over the Sony ones–the Sony ones have a tendency to more of a greenish tinge than is to my liking. But again, since the purpose here is to show the performance of the camera and not necessarily to present finished, polished images, I’ll use the camera’s own profiles.

The exposure is tricky, because it’s quite a wide dynamic range, but you also don’t want the shutter to be too slow because the sea lions are moving pretty quickly. Adding artificial light isn’t practical because of reflections off the thick glass wall and also there are many scratches in the wall that catch the light. This shot has had some cropping from the original, but the 24MP sensor leaves plenty of room to work with to crop and still end up with a high-resolution image that’s plenty big enough for print enlargements.

This one has had some shadow recovery to bring out the colors and detail on the plane because the auto exposure (aperture priority) understandably underexposed the plane because of all the other light in the frame–it’s a hard one for the algorithm to work with.

With the dark, rich tones in a room that is quite dark, this Buddhist shrine in the Sackler Gallery can often end up being very muddled and blocky. But the a7iii’s sensor handled it wonderfully, with very distinct detail even when viewed at 100 percent.

This shot, with the reflection from the inside of the glass display case, isn’t really possible to take without setting off alarms when using a regular viewfinder. It’s an example where the live view screen is indispensable.
