Iglesia de Santa Ines

It’s not the most lavish of the many churches in Mexico City’s Centro Historico district, but this church dedicated to Saint Agnes of Rome is one of the more tastefully decorated.

It’s not the most lavish of the many churches in Mexico City’s Centro Historico district, but it is one of the more tastefully decorated.

That’s not to say it’s plain–it isn’t. But its color scheme of gold and tan is tastefully restrained and, compared to many other Central American churches, coordinated rather than ostentatiously eclectic. The effect is to focus attention on the altar, where a statue of Madonna and Child is set against a pink curtain and has a halo of star lights.

The church is dedicated to Saint Agnes of Rome, renowned for her chastity and purity, and you can find depictions of her in the church, often holding a lamb.
