The Virginia State Capitol building, completed in 1788, is the seat of the oldest legislative body in the United States, the Virginia General Assembly. Believed to have been designed by Thomas Jefferson, the building is modeled on a Roman temple in Southern France, the Maison Carrée.

Set on expansive grounds in the center of the city, it sits on a hill overlooking downtown Richmond, surrounded by lobbyist and business offices.
