Copyright & Licensing

All content on this site is © David Coleman. All rights reserved.

Thank you for your interest in my work. Everything on this site — the photographs and the writing — is created by me, David Coleman, except where otherwise indicated — and I am the copyright owner.

The content is protected by U.S. and international copyright law, and many of my photographs are registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which can substantially increase the damages recoverable for infringement. None of it may be stored, reproduced, reposted, displayed, modified, or transmitted in any form, electronic or otherwise, without my written permission or a formal license. This applies to everything on these pages, including the text of individual posts and the original photographs.

License an image — The photographs are available to license for editorial, commercial, and personal use, and some as fine-art prints. There are two ways to license any image on this site:

  • Directly (recommended). License straight from my own archive at images.havecamerawilltravel.photography. You get the best rates, the fastest turnaround, and you deal with me directly. Under any photo, use the “Buy or license this image: Directly” link, or browse the full archive to search by location or subject.
  • Through Alamy. Many of these images are also available through Alamy — convenient if you already have an Alamy account, or need their invoicing and contract terms. Under any photo, use the “or through Alamy” link.

Both lead to the same image; choose whichever fits how you prefer to buy. I retain copyright on every image and don’t transfer it except under a signed contract and negotiated fee.

Buy a print — Fine-art and standard prints of some images are available directly through the same archive.

What you can license images for — Editorial (magazines, newspapers, books, documentaries, blogs); Commercial (advertising, marketing, websites, apps, packaging, presentations); Personal (prints and personal projects). Both rights-managed and royalty-free options depending on the image and channel; exact terms and pricing are shown at checkout. Which license is available for a specific image depends heavily on the content of that image.

The terms that apply — The binding license is the one provided at the point of purchase directly through my image archive or Alamy. That document governs your permitted uses, duration, territory, and exclusivity. This page is a plain-language summary, not the license itself.

Please don’t — Use any image without a license (none are free, including for small or non-profit projects); remove or obscure the credit line or embedded copyright metadata; redistribute, resell, sublicense, or share the files; or use the images or any content on this site to train, fine-tune, or build AI/ML models or datasets, or collect it through automated scraping, text or data mining, or bulk download. No such rights are granted, and that reservation is also recorded in the embedded metadata of every image. Unlicensed use is copyright infringement and is actively monitored.

Fair use — keep quotes to ~50 words from a single page with a link back; educational use → get in touch. If you’d like to know more about copyright and fair use, here’s a good summary.
