Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Sample Images: Real-World Examples

This is a selection of photos I’ve taken with the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD. I’ve included a range of settings and lighting conditions to give a sense of how it performs in real-world shooting conditions.

Practical field notes, hands-on gear tests.

Tamron’s 28-300mm lens is designed as a versatile all-in-one zoom for full-frame sensor cameras, the type of lens you might leave on your camera most of the time for things like travel photography.

I’ve posted a more detailed review separately, as well as a comparison with Nikon’s 28-300mm, but here’s the short version.

There are versions for Nikon F, Canon EF, and Sony E mounts.

It has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 to f/6.3, depending on which end of the zoom range you use it. So it’s not the fastest lens out there. But the Nikon and Canon versions include vibration reduction (or vibration compensation, as Tamron calls it) that helps recover a couple of stops in lower light shooting.

It’s constructed of 19 elements in 15 groups with seven blades, has a filter size of 67mm, and weighs 19 ounces (540 grams). It comes with a lens hood.

Tamron’s lens aims to be an affordably priced competitor to Canon’s and Nikon’s own 28-300mm lenses. I’ve been shooting with the Tamron alongside the Nikon 28-300mm and will be posting a side-by-side comparison review shortly.

In the meantime, here’s a set of sample images I’ve taken with this lens under various settings and conditions to give a sense of how it performs in real-world shooting. These were all shot on a Nikon D810 and lightly processed in Lightroom. You can click on each image to open a full-size version for a closer look.

Photo taken with a TAMRON 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD A010N lens at 28mm and f/16 on a Nikon D810. As you can see, there’s quite a lot of flaring if you decide to point straight at a bright light source like the sun. The flares going out about 4 o’clock from the sun looking natural enough and not too hard to remove with a clone tool in Lightroom or Photoshop, but the concentric rings at around 10 o’clock are pretty distracting and difficult to remove. Photo taken with a TAMRON 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD A010N lens at 28mm and f/9 on a Nikon D810. Two things to note in this one. Firstly, there’s some ugly flaring and reflections off the edge of the lens at top right. Secondly, notice the bend in the Washington Monument from the barrel distortion even though it’s relatively close to the middle of the frame. Photo by David Coleman / Have Camera Will Travel

Where to find them (maybe new, but more likely used)

This lens is for DSLRs, and the market is focused it attention on mirrorless cameras. So it’s getting harder and harder to find new copies in stock at any retailers (though it still might be possible if you go hunting for it).

But I’ve found it to be pretty widely available on the used market, and often at bargain prices.

David Coleman

I take photos for a living. Now based in Washington, D.C., I have spent the last 30+ years shooting across seven continents — from underwater environments to mountain peaks. My images and time-lapses have appeared in major newspapers, magazines, museums, professional sports stadiums, and even on massive architectural scrims covering world-famous buildings.

I started this site in 2009 to field-test gear, share problem-solving solutions, and share what I've learned in shooting around the world. I only review gear and services I have personally used. No armchair opinions — just real-world experience. Because, for me, the fun is in the making of the photo.
