Here’s a collection of sample photos taken with a Nikon D5500. They’re taken with a variety of ISOs, apertures, and with a couple of different lenses, including the standard 18-55mm kit lens and a 35mm f/1.8G.
If you’re trying to decide whether to get a D5500, hopefully, these shots give some sense of how it performs under a variety of real-world shooting conditions.
The D5500 has a 24-megapixel DX-format sensor that produces images that are 6000×4000 pixels. It has an ISO range from 100 to 25,600.
These images were shot in Nikon’s RAW file format as NEF files. They’ve had minimal processing in Lightroom. To open a full-size version, click on an image.

Price & Availability of the Nikon D5500
The Nikon D5500 is an older model now, having been replaced by the D5600. So it’s getting harder to find it in stores, but you can occasionally come across them.

I'm a professional photographer based in Washington DC. Seven continents, up mountains, underwater, and a bunch of places in between. I've been shooting for 30+ years, and my my photos and time-lapse videos have appeared in a bunch of different publications from major newspapers to magazines and books, billboards, TV shows, professional sports stadiums, museums, and even massive architectural scrims covering world-famous buildings while they're being renovated. indeed the 18-55mm lens does not support such an impressive bokeh, what kind of lens should i swap it with??
There are a number of good options. If you want to stick to Nikon’s range, the 35mm ƒ/1.8G
prime is both very good and affordable, although being a prime obviously means you don’t have some of the versatility of a zoom. But it’s an excellent starting point for branching out beyond the kit lens. For something more versatile, the 18-140mm is one I like. For something with even more reach, the Sigma 18-300mm is worth a look. These last two aren’t especially fast lenses, but when you combined their largest apertures with their longer focal lengths you can get some nice falloff behind the subject. Beyond that, the sky’s the limit, often with prices to match, as you start heading into higher-end glass.
