Nikon Z 105mm f/2.8 Macro: More Than Just Close-Ups

A year of real shooting with the Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S on a Nikon Z8, from macro close-ups to cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin. Here’s a look at the sample images and why its flat-field macro design makes it an unusually capable everyday telephoto.

Practical field notes, hands-on gear tests.

I’ve used the AF-S version of Nikon’s 105mm f/2.8 macro for years, but about 12 months ago, I switched to the Z-mount NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S on my Nikon Z8. I’ve been shooting with it regularly ever since.

You’d expect it to be good for macro work. And it is. Excellent, even.

With 1:1 full-frame magnification, solid vibration reduction, and highly reliable autofocus on the Z8, it’s my go-to for gear close-ups on this site, as well as flower photography.

What makes this lens so valuable, however, is that it significantly overperforms as a general-purpose telephoto — precisely because of its macro design.

True macro lenses are engineered with a “flat field of focus.” They’re designed to ensure that when reproducing a flat subject (like a document, coin, or piece of art), the corners remain just as razor-sharp as the dead center, practically eliminating optical field curvature. Standard fast portrait primes, like the 105mm f/1.4, are fundamentally optimized for something entirely different: maximum center resolution and extreme background separation. A bit of field curvature is tolerated in those lenses because corner sharpness is irrelevant when the edges of your frame are melting into bokeh.

Because of this, when I turn the 105mm f/2.8 toward the rigid columns of the Lincoln Memorial or shoot sweeping architectural landscapes across the Tidal Basin, that flat-field design pays huge dividends. It delivers a level of edge-to-edge sharpness across the entire focal plane that traditional portrait lenses struggle to match, producing a look free of typical subtle curvature.

While the 105mm focal length and f/2.8 maximum aperture put it squarely in the ideal range for portraits — and it works quite well for that — Nikon makes significantly more expensive, faster primes specifically suited for portraiture (like the 135mm f/1.8 Plena, 85mm f/1.2, and even another 105mm, the f/1.4). I doubt many people buy the 105mm f/2.8 strictly to shoot portraits.

Instead, the combination of a moderate telephoto reach, a fast-enough aperture, and a flat perspective makes it an incredibly capable tool for general photography. Below is a selection of images showing how I use it for both macro and non-macro work. A large portion of these are from the Tidal Basin; this is, by far, the lens I rely on most for tracking the cherry blossoms. I use it not just for detail close-ups, but for wide context shots, and I’ll often head down there with this as my only lens.

Sample images

Here’s a selection of images I’ve taken with this lens (if you’re looking for a filter for it, check my Nikon lens filter size chart). I tend to use it mostly wide open, or near wide open, and shoot with it on a Nikon Z8.

It will also work on a DX body, but the focal length will 1.5x (i.e., around 158mm in 35mm equivalent terms). If you’re interested in how that translates in terms of perspective, I have posted a separate calculator for that.

A pretty standard on-the-go macro shot (handheld and natural lighting) that shows just how narrow the depth of field is even at f/6.3 when close up. Of course, a smaller aperture and/or focus stacking would go a long way to addressing that, but that wasn’t the point of the exercise here. I’ve shot variations of this many times over the years, but I particularly like the way the 105mm f/2.8 creates some depth. By the way, the unusual lighting is natural and the result of natural golden sunlight entering the chamber around the equinox (because of the East-West orientation of the Lincoln Memorial) right after sunrise on a clear morning. This is taken from across the opposite side of the Tidal Basin. Sure, a longer zoom would get you in even closer, but then keeping the reflection in frame becomes a challenge, even when shooting in portrait orientation. The large maximum aperture creates nice separation through the focal plane. Camera & Lens: Nikon Z8 + Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S @ 105mm (35mm equiv.); Exposure: ¹⁄₄₀₀₀ sec at f/2.8, ISO 64. Photo by David Coleman / Have Camera Will Travel

In many circumstances, I would be more inclined to reach for either a tighter telephoto zoom like a 70-200mm or a wide-angle like a 24mm for a shot like this. But I like the unassuming visual balance that the 105mm can bring. Camera & Lens: Nikon Z8 + Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S @ 105mm (35mm equiv.); Exposure: ¹⁄₁₂₅ sec at f/3.5, ISO 100. Like the Lincoln Memorial shot above, I’ve taken many variations of this over the years, including with faster (f/1.4) 105mm lenses. But I’ve found that, when wide open, they can make this shot a little confusing by isolating the face so much and blurring the folded arms to such an extent that it’s hard to make out what the arms are (obviously, one solution would simply to stop down to f/2.8 on that lens, too). But I like the balance here of separation — just enough but not too much. Camera & Lens: Nikon Z8 + Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S @ 105mm (35mm equiv.); Exposure: ¹⁄₂₀₀₀ sec at f/2.8, ISO 64. I do love sunflowers, and the 105mm can be used for several compositions with them (some included elsewhere on this page). Camera & Lens: Nikon Z8 + Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S @ 105mm (35mm equiv.); Exposure: ¹⁄₂₅₀₀ sec at f/4.5, ISO 64. Photo by David Coleman / Have Camera Will Travel

I like the lens’s ability to create depth through the frame. You can obviously also do that with other fast telephotos like a 70-200mm f/2.8, but in this case I like that I can go quickly from a macro close-up of the flowers to quickly grab a context shot like this that’s closer to a landscape. This was one of several occasions where I’ve really put the weather resistance of the camera and lens to the test, and it has come out with flying colors. This was a soaking rain, and for quite a while. Not having to constantly change lenses when moving from close-up to more distant shots also comes in handy. All of the shots on this page, including this one, were taken handheld. The strong focusing works well, and the VR is exceptionally useful when the flowers are moving about in the breeze (as they usually are, at least to some extent). This lens doesn’t have the same kind of unusual round blades of Nikon’s Plena lens, but the bokeh is still quite round. In this case, the white light in the background is a path light that is exaggerated by the bokeh. I take photos for a living. Now based in Washington, D.C., I have spent the last 30+ years shooting across seven continents — from underwater environments to mountain peaks. My images and time-lapses have appeared in major newspapers, magazines, museums, professional sports stadiums, and even on massive architectural scrims covering world-famous buildings.

I started this site in 2009 to field-test gear, share problem-solving solutions, and share what I've learned in shooting around the world. I only review gear and services I have personally used. No armchair opinions — just real-world experience. Because, for me, the fun is in the making of the photo.

  1. I’ve had this Nikon Z105mm f2.8 in mind for a while and your pictures just confirmed that I want this in my kit but maybe not just yet which is a shame as I’m heading to Japan next week. This lens retails for $1,699 in Australia so it’s a bit exxy for me right now but it’ll happen as well as the 20mm f1.8.
Really nice Photographs and even though I’ve only got a Z5II, I’m sure i can achieve close to that of your images. So far I’ve got the 24-200mm f4-6.3 zoom, the 40mm f2 and 50mm f1.8S so i’ll have to make do with that kit for a little while. Awesome pics David, I’ve also forwarded this page to my friend Steve who is also learning different aspects of his photography.

    • Hi David, Yeah, it’s a really nice lens to shoot with and one I use *a lot* at this time of year (heading into northern spring). It’s not exactly petite for packing in a travel kit, but it gets some great results.

Have a fun trip up north!
