Practical field notes, hands-on gear tests.

Sigma’s 35mm f/1.4 Art lens is designed as a cost-effective alternative to the Canon and Nikon lens of the same focal length and speed.

I’ve previously posted a detailed hands-on review of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM | Art Lens. This collection of sample images is designed to go along with that review.

The version I’ve been using is the Nikon F-mount version, on a full-frame Nikon D800 FX DSLR. They also have versions for Canon EF, Pentax K, and Sigma SA mounts.

Optical correction tools

I deliberately haven’t applied extensive corrections to these images. And the general rule of thumb in photography is that it’s better to get the shot right at the time of capture rather than trying to fix it after. That’s a great aspiration, but it’s not always possible to do if you’re bumping up against limitations or flaws in gear, conditions, or technique.

But it’s worth mentioning that there are some excellent tools available to help address common issues with lenses, such as distortion, chromatic aberration, and lens vignetting when editing the images. All-round image processing apps like Lightroom Classic and Capture One have solid tools built in already that often cater to specific lens profiles (or you can make your own).

Some more specialized tools can take it even further. DxO, in particular, sets the gold standard. Their software is built on the foundation of their incredibly deep archive of data from their extensive lab testing of the optical performance of lenses and cameras. But there are some other excellent specialized tools available. These are well worth a look (and have free trials):

  • DxO Pure RAW (for a suite of automatic RAW file corrections enhancement)
  • DxO ViewPoint (correcting for distortion and geometry)
  • Topaz Labs Sharpen AI (in addition to standard unsharp tools, includes focus correction and shake reduction)
  • On1 NoNoise (includes Tack Sharp AI, which applies sharpening)

Price & availability of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

The version I’ve been using is the Nikon F-mount version. Sigma also makes versions for Canon EF, Pentax K, and Sigma SA mounts, all of which are designed for full-frame cameras.

There’s also a related model for Sony E and Leica L cropped-sensor mounts: the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art.

Check the current price and availability at:

You can rent them from LensProtoGo.

Accessories for the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens

Filters. It takes standard 67mm screw-in filters: Polarizer | UV/Haze | ND.

Lens Hood. It comes with a lens hood. If you need a replacement, the model number is LH730-03.

Lens Case. It comes with a semi-soft lens case. There’s no particular reason you have to stick with the Sigma official case, but if you’re after a replacement, the model number is CS0330.

David Coleman

I take photos for a living. Now based in Washington, D.C., I have spent the last 30+ years shooting across seven continents — from underwater environments to mountain peaks. My images and time-lapses have appeared in major newspapers, magazines, museums, professional sports stadiums, and even on massive architectural scrims covering world-famous buildings.

I started this site in 2009 to field-test gear, share problem-solving solutions, and share what I've learned in shooting around the world. I only review gear and services I have personally used. No armchair opinions — just real-world experience. Because, for me, the fun is in the making of the photo.

  1. Hi. Do you really not know what Sigma is pulling off? The unit‑to‑unit inconsistency is downright ridiculous — buying multiple copies of the same lens feels like gambling, because each one behaves like a completely different product. Their quality control is practically nonexistent, their tolerances are sloppy, and their manufacturing standards are far from strict.

They cherry‑pick flawless, hand‑checked review samples so experts praise them, but the units they actually sell don’t match that level at all. Those retail copies aren’t properly inspected, calibrated, or even consistent. They’re misleading customers and acting as if no one will catch on. And I know this because I’ve bought several copies of the same lens myself, and the differences are impossible to ignore.

    • Hi Alfred. Thanks for your comment, and sorry you’ve had bad experiences with them. I don’t blame you for being frustrated with them. But that hasn’t been my experience.

To be clear: Sigma doesn’t send me anything, so in this case, at least, there wasn’t any cherry picking going on. I’ve bought myself some of the Sigma lenses I’ve reviewed here. For example, I had the 150-600 for several years and only got rid of it to upgrade to the Nikon Z lens. Others are off-the-shelf copies from retailers or rentals through the usual online rental sources.

I have had some issues with calibration and focus, and I’ve mentioned those in the reviews. I had a very poor experience with some Sigma teleconverters and decided just not to review them because I returned them and didn’t see anything useful coming from even trying to review them. But overall, my experience has been pretty positive, especially with the Art series lenses (I happen to like fast primes, and many of those fall in that line, which also tend to be more expensive than their C line, for example).

But since I’ve mostly moved on to Z mirrorless now, and Sigma doesn’t offer much in that mount (in full-frame, at least), I haven’t been testing many of them lately.
