Battery finder: Which battery does your GoPro camera take?

Whether you’re looking for a replacement battery or a spare (or two), here are the model numbers for GoPro batteries that correspond to GoPro cameras.

In some cases, there’s more than one model number that can be used in a particular camera. For instance, some batteries have been tweaked and replaced with newer iterations, along the lines of AHDBT-201 and AHDBT-301. In those cases, I’ve listed the most recent iteration, which is both the newer version and is generally more widely available.

I should mention, too, that I’m referring here to the official GoPro model numbers. Aftermarket batteries can also be good value, and they often perform well (but quality and quality control can vary). They nearly always refer to the same official GoPro battery model numbers, so a search for these model numbers should also be useful for finding aftermarket versions.

If you’re new to GoPros, it’s a natural question whether all GoPro batteries are the same. And there’s a simple answer: no, they’re not. You must get the correct model battery for your specific model of GoPro camera.

Many GoPro batteries look similar, but there can be differences in physical dimensions and contact points between camera models. And in recent years, some have used different technology.

So you do need to make sure that you get the right battery for the specific GoPro camera model.

The same goes for external battery chargers. The GoPro Dual Charger for the HERO8 batteries, for example, won’t work with HERO9 batteries. (But the Dual Charger for HERO9 batteries will work with the HERO10 batteries.)

Heads up! The GoPro HERO13 Black uses a new model of the Enduro battery (and charger)

GoPro released the HERO13 Black in September 2024. While it still uses an Enduro battery, it’s an updated version and is NOT compatible with the previous versions used in the HERO9 through HERO12.

The model number of the new version is AEBAT-001. (It’s also sold as a two-pack, in which case the product number is AEBAT-201. AEDBD-201 is a different thing again — the dual charger bundled with two of these batteries.)

GoPro could have made it easier on us and called it something different. Or at least use some kind of naming convention that sets it apart from the previous one. But nope, it’s still called the Enduro. (As is the MAX 2 battery. Grrr.)

It should be explicitly listed as the HERO13 Black model, but not every retailer is that careful or that accurate. So you might need to verify for yourself to make sure it’s the correct one that’s compatible with your camera.

For the HERO13 Black Enduro battery, there are two key things to look for:

• It should be all black. If it has a white end cap (like the image below on the right), it’s not the right one for the HERO13 Black — the white-capped ones are for the HERO9/10/11/12 models.
• It’s rated for a capacity of 1900mAh. The older version is rated for 1720mAh.

There is now a second battery that works in the HERO13 Black. The Enduro 2 (AGBAT-001, 2150mAh) came in with the MISSION 1 cameras, and GoPro lists it as an upgrade battery for the HERO13 Black for longer runtimes. So a HERO13 owner shopping for spares has two valid choices — the 1900mAh AEBAT-001 or the 2150mAh Enduro 2 — but still not the 1720mAh version from the HERO9 through HERO12.

Important: GoPro MAX 2 vs. original MAX batteries

Just as with the HERO13 Black, the release of the GoPro MAX 2 brings a new battery form factor that is not backward compatible.

The original GoPro MAX (released in 2019) used the ACBAT-001 battery. The new GoPro MAX 2 uses a completely different battery model (AMBAT-001), which carries the “Enduro” branding, indicating better cold-weather performance.

So it’s another instance where GoPro’s product naming system makes things as clear as mud, and it’s not safe to assume that because they are both “Max” cameras that the batteries are swappable. They are physically different, and the older batteries will not fit or function in the new MAX 2. Always check the model number before buying spares.

Things worth knowing about GoPro batteries

There’s more than one way to charge GoPro batteries. I’ve included the corresponding external battery charger models in the table above, but the batteries can also be charged directly in the camera (with a USB charger cable). The charger models I’ve listed above are the official ones put out by GoPro, but there are many aftermarket external charger cradles that also work well.

All of GoPro’s removable batteries, the Enduro versions included, are rechargeable lithium-ion. The Enduro ones use the same basic chemistry but are built to keep working better in the cold. That’s worth knowing when you fly: spare lithium-ion batteries have to go in your carry-on, not in checked bags.

Some GoPro cameras don’t have removable batteries. They have built-in internal batteries that can’t be replaced. The most recent GoPro models like that are the LIT HERO and the entry-level HERO (2024), followed by the HERO11 Black Mini, HERO7 Silver, and HERO7 White. The same is true for all Session models and some of the older models.

Aftermarket batteries by third-party manufacturers can often be very good options. Many of them perform well, and they can provide much better value than the official GoPro-branded ones. But quality control can vary with some of the no-name brands. And it is at least theoretically possible for GoPro to cut off compatibility with aftermarket batteries with camera firmware updates. They’ve actually done that once — back with the HERO5 — but it’s not something that camera manufacturers do often.

In some cases, there can be more than one type of battery that’s compatible with the camera (I’m referring here to differently performing batteries, not the smaller model number tweaks I refer to above). So far, that affects the HERO9 Black, HERO10 Black, HERO11 Black, and HERO12 Black, and now the HERO13 Black, which takes either its own 1900mAh Enduro or the newer 2150mAh Enduro 2. All of those will work with the latest Enduro batteries, but the earlier models in that list come with the Standard battery (with the HERO12 Black and HERO11 Black, the Enduro is the recommended battery to use).
