Modern cameras tend to churn through battery power. So at some point, you’re going to need a new battery or spares for your camera.

On top of that, lithium batteries do degrade the more you use them. That’s precisely why some camera manufacturers have gone to the effort to create battery health check features accessible through the camera’s menu system.

And a full day of shooting can deplete the charge quite quickly, even with a small and lightweight camera like the Fujifilm X100VI; mirrorless cameras tend to be especially power-hungry. So carrying spares is always a good idea so your camera doesn’t die just when you want to keep shooting.

But keeping track of which battery model is right for your camera isn’t as straightforward as it could be. The X-T1 and the X-T5, for example, look like close relatives from the outside, but their batteries aren’t shared: the X-T5 takes the bigger NP-W235, while the X-T1 runs on the much smaller, older NP-W126.

Which is why I’ve created these charts: in the hope it makes it easier to get the right battery for your camera and get back out shooting.

Things worth knowing

• The manufacturers do sometimes come out with newer versions of some batteries. And sometimes there’s more than one model that’s compatible. I’ve noted those cases above.
• With Fujifilm, the battery families themselves are fairly clean — the NP-W126S and the bigger NP-W235 cover most of the current X series, and older bodies run on the original NP-W126. The confusion is in the chargers. Plenty of Fujifilm bodies ship with no external charger at all: the X-T5, the X-T4 and the X100VI all charge the battery inside the camera over USB-C, so charging a spare means buying a separate charger. Fujifilm’s own dual charger for the larger cell, the BC-W235, covers the X-T4, X-T5, X-H2, X-H2S, X-S20 and the GFX bodies — but it has no power supply of its own, so you also need an AC adapter and a USB-C cable. Older bodies go the other way: the X-T1 shipped with the BC-W126 charger in the box and can’t charge over USB at all.

There’s an extra wrinkle with the smaller battery. The NP-W126S replaced the original NP-W126, and the S matters: it handles heat better, and newer bodies aren’t always happy with the old cell — the X100VI, for one, will warn you if it finds a non-S NP-W126 in the compartment. So when you’re buying a spare for a recent body, buy the S version.

One more thing worth knowing if a camera sits unused for long stretches. On the X100VI, storing the body for several days without a charged battery in it lets the internal backup cell run down, and the camera comes back with everything reset to factory defaults — custom banks and film recipes included. Leaving a charged battery in it, even if you’re not shooting, avoids that.

Third-party batteries for Fujifilm cameras

I’m focusing here on original Fujifilm-branded batteries because those are the ones that Fujifilm guarantees to work in their cameras.

But there’s also a whole universe of aftermarket batteries out there. They’re often significantly cheaper than the OEM versions. Sometimes they’re the only option that’s available in stock.

I’ve used many aftermarket batteries over the years in many different cameras and have found many of them to work well. I’ve also come across some that don’t. So I can’t give a blanket statement that you should or should not get third-party batteries. Because the reality is that some are better than others.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: Fujifilm cameras do check what’s in the battery compartment. The X100VI, for instance, warns you if it finds an older non-S NP-W126, and knock-off batteries are known to spoof the NP-W126S identity to get around that check.

The bigger issue is what’s inside them. Many third-party cells have no internal temperature sensor, so charging current isn’t moderated, and the symptoms range from capacity readouts that lie to the camera shutting down with charge apparently remaining. In the worst cases, the cell swells enough to jam in the battery slot (though I’ve never had that happen myself).

So a third-party battery that has served you well in an older camera isn’t a safe bet in a newer one. Or even in the same camera in the future.

I’m not saying don’t buy them. I am saying that if you do decide to buy them, it’s worth doing so knowing that it does come with more risk than buying the Fujifilm-branded versions.

In nearly all cases, the third-party batteries are listed on retailers’ sites using the original model numbers. So doing a search for those should surface any third-party alternatives that are available.
