At some point, you’re going to need a new battery or spares for your camera.

Lithium batteries do degrade, which is why some cameras even have battery health check features built in.

And a full day of shooting can deplete the charge quite quickly; mirrorless cameras tend to be especially power-hungry. So carrying spares is always a good idea so your camera doesn’t die just when you want to keep shooting.

But keeping track of which battery model is right for your camera isn’t as straightforward as it could be. The a6700 and a6400, for example, look like siblings from the outside, but their batteries aren’t shared: the a6700 takes the big NP-FZ100, while the a6400 runs on the much smaller, older NP-FW50.

Which is why I’ve created these charts: in the hope it makes it easier to get the right battery for your camera and get out shooting more quickly.

Things worth knowing

• The manufacturers do sometimes come out with newer versions of some batteries. And sometimes there’s more than one model that’s compatible. I’ve noted those cases below.
• With Sony, the battery families themselves are refreshingly clean — NP-FZ100, NP-FW50, NP-FM500H and NP-BX1 cover nearly everything. The confusion is in the chargers. Plenty of Sony bodies ship with no charger at all: the RX100 VII, for instance, comes with a USB AC adapter and a micro-USB cable and charges the battery inside the camera, so charging a spare means buying a separate charger. The a6700 goes further and includes neither a charger nor a cable — you charge over USB-C from a power-delivery source of at least 18W (3A), or buy the BC-ZD1 or BC-QZ1. And the BC-ZD1 dual charger has no power supply of its own: it needs a USB-PD source of 30W or more, plus a USB-C cable rated for 3A, which you supply yourself.

There’s an extra wrinkle if you bought your camera in Europe. Sony sells revised versions of several models with an A on the end of the model name — the a6100A, a6400A, RX100 VIIA and ZV-1A among them. Those bodies don’t charge their batteries in the camera, and Sony includes an external charger in the box instead. So if you own one of the A variants, a USB cable is not a backup charging plan.

Third-party batteries for Sony cameras

I’m focusing here on original Sony-branded batteries because those are the ones that Sony guarantees to work in their cameras.

But there’s also a whole universe of aftermarket batteries out there. They’re often significantly cheaper than the OEM versions. Sometimes they’re the only option that’s available in stock.

I’ve used many aftermarket batteries over the years in many different cameras and have found many of them to work well. I’ve also come across some that don’t. So I can’t give a blanket statement that you should or should not get third-party batteries. Because the reality is that some are better than others.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: Sony cameras check what’s in the battery compartment, and firmware updates have made them fussier over time. Put a third-party NP-FZ100 in a recent body and there’s a good chance you’ll see a message telling you the operation and safety of this battery cannot be guaranteed. You can dismiss it and keep shooting, but it tends to come back every time you switch the camera on. Sony’s authentication check has also been known to flag genuine-looking, full-price batteries, so the warning isn’t proof you bought a fake. And it’s entirely possible for Sony to clamp down even tighter in a future firmware update.

So a third-party battery that has served you well in an older camera isn’t a safe bet in a newer one. Or even in the same camera in the future.

I’m not saying don’t buy them. I am saying that if you do decide to buy them, it’s worth doing so knowing that it does come with more risk than buying the Sony-branded versions.

In nearly all cases, the third-party batteries are listed on retailers’ sites using the original model numbers. So doing a search for those should surface any third-party alternatives that are available.
