At some point, you’re going to need a new battery or spares for your camera.

Lithium batteries do degrade, which is why some cameras even have battery health check features built in.

And a full day of shooting can deplete the charge quite quickly; mirrorless cameras tend to be especially power-hungry. So carrying spares is always a good idea so your camera doesn’t die just when you want to keep shooting.

But keeping track of which battery model is right for your camera isn’t as straightforward as it could be. The GH5 and GH5 II, for example, look like siblings from the outside, but they didn’t ship with the same battery: the GH5 uses the DMW-BLF19, while the GH5 II switched to the DMW-BLK22 that the S5 and GH6 also use.

Which is why I’ve created these charts: in the hope it makes it easier to get the right battery for your camera and get out shooting more quickly.

The chart above has the full detail. If you just want the one-line answer for your camera — or want to know which of your other bodies can share spares — here’s the same information grouped by battery. It comes from the same verified data as the chart, so it stays in step as new models are added.

Things worth knowing about Lumix batteries & chargers

• The manufacturers do sometimes come out with newer versions of some batteries. And sometimes there’s more than one model that’s compatible. I’ve noted those cases below.
• With Panasonic, the battery families do most of the work: DMW-BLK22 covers the S5, S5 II and S5 IIX, the GH5 II, GH6 and GH7, and the G9 II; DMW-BLF19 covers the older GH3, GH4, GH5, GH5S and the original G9; DMW-BLJ31 covers the S1, S1R and S1H; and DMW-BLC12 covers a long list of G and FZ bodies, including the G7, G85, G95, GX8, FZ200, FZ300, FZ1000 and FZ2500. The confusion is in the chargers. Panasonic matches a charger to a battery family rather than to a camera: the DMW-BTC15 is the one for the BLK22, and the DMW-BTC14 is the charger Panasonic warranties for the BLJ31 in the S1 and S1R. Newer Lumix bodies charge the battery inside the camera over USB-C, and the external charger is an optional extra, so topping up a spare while you shoot means buying that charger separately.
• There’s an extra wrinkle between the BLF19 and the BLK22. They’re close in size and shape, so it’s easy to assume they swap freely. They don’t: the BLK22 has an extra set of contacts, and a BLF19 won’t run an S5. The chargers follow the same one-way rule — the newer USB charger for the BLK22 will also charge a BLF19, but the older G-series chargers won’t charge a BLK22. So if you’re mixing old and new batteries, check which charger you actually have before you travel with only one of them.
• And despite both being full-frame S-series bodies, the S1 line and the S5 line don’t share a battery. If you’ve moved from an S1 to an S5 II, your DMW-BLJ31 cells and DMW-BTC14 charger don’t carry over: the S5 II takes the DMW-BLK22, which is also what the DMW-BGS5 battery grip uses.
• This is a growing document that I try to keep updated as new models are released. So please let me know if you spot any issues that need updating or correcting.

Third-party batteries for Panasonic Lumix cameras

I’m focusing here on original Panasonic Lumix-branded batteries because those are the ones the manufacturer guarantees will work in their cameras.

But there’s also a whole universe of aftermarket batteries out there. They’re often significantly cheaper than the OEM versions. Sometimes they’re the only option that’s available in stock.

I’ve used many aftermarket batteries over the years in many different cameras and have found many of them to work well. I’ve also come across some that don’t. So I can’t give a blanket statement that you should or should not get third-party batteries. Because the reality is that some are better than others.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: the official chargers are matched to specific battery models, and third-party cells and official chargers don’t always get along. So if you go aftermarket, it’s usually simplest to buy the battery together with a matching third-party charger, rather than assuming your Panasonic charger will top it up.

So a third-party battery that has served you well in one body isn’t automatically a safe bet in another, even when the label says the same model number.

I’m not saying don’t buy them. I am saying that if you do buy them, it’s worth doing so clear-eyed about the increased risk compared to buying Panasonic-branded ones.

In nearly all cases, the third-party batteries are listed on retailers’ sites using the original model numbers. So doing a search for those should surface any third-party alternatives that are available.
