How to Reset and Find a GoPro’s Wifi Password & Network ID

Whether you’re doing it as a security precaution or because you’re trying to avoid wifi conflicts, there are times you might want to reset your GoPro’s wifi password and SSID.

Different GoPro models do things slightly differently. So I’ve laid out the instructions for specific models below. And some models — specifically older ones — let you assign your own SSID and password, while newer models generate those for you.

In all cases, you generate the new password on the camera itself. There’s not much sense in trying to do it wirelessly, obviously, because that would break the connection.

One thing worth knowing up front: from the HERO5 on, there is no standard GoPro wifi password to fall back on. Each camera makes up its own (on the HERO10 and earlier, it’s a short word and four digits, like wave3020), and resetting doesn’t restore a factory default; it just generates a new one. So if you’ve forgotten yours, there’s no magic word to try. You look it up on the camera, which is what the steps below cover. The HERO4 is the exception, and it’s further down the page.

So here’s a rundown on how to reset the wifi password on specific GoPro models. I’ve also included information on how to look up the camera’s network name and wifi password if you’ve forgotten it.

HERO13 Black

The HERO13 Black works like the models below it: the camera generates its own name and password, and you can’t set your own. What changed is where the reset lives — it’s now in a Wireless Connections menu inside Preferences.

To reset the wifi password, swipe down on the back screen to open the Dashboard, swipe left, and go to:

Preferences > Wireless Connections > Reset Connections

That clears all your device connections and resets the camera’s password, so you’ll need to reconnect your phone and any remotes afterward.

To see the camera’s name and its new password, go to:

Preferences > Wireless Connections > Wireless Info

Don’t go looking under Camera Info for it. On the HERO13 that has moved under About, where it shows the serial number and software version.

HERO12 Black, HERO11 Black, HERO10 Black, HERO9 Black, HERO8 Black, HERO7 Black, Silver & White

This applies to the HERO12, HERO11, HERO10, HERO9, HERO8, and HERO7 cameras. With these cameras, you can’t just make up your own wifi password or assign a custom network name to the camera. Both are generated automatically.

To reset the wifi password, use the back screen menu to go to:

Preferences > Connections > Reset Connections 

NB: On the HERO12, HERO11, HERO10, and HERO9 Black, the Connections menu is alongside the Preferences menu rather than below it.

You’ll then be prompted for confirmation, and it will reset them and do a quick soft reboot.

There are a couple of things to note about the process. Firstly, it resets all your wireless connections, including wifi to the mobile app as well as remote controls. Secondly, it doesn’t automatically tell you what the new wifi credentials are. To find the current camera name on the network and its wifi password, go to:

Preferences > Connections > Camera Info

That tells you the Camera Name, which is what you’re looking for from the mobile app. It will be something like GP23650496, for example. The password will be something along the lines of canoe4427 or wave3020 or action8924.

One thing resetting the connections doesn’t do: it doesn’t touch anything on your SD card, and it doesn’t change your capture settings or presets. It clears the devices you’ve paired and issues a new wifi password, and that’s all. A factory reset is a separate, bigger step.

The HERO11 Black Mini is the odd one out. It has no touchscreen, and no Reset Connections option at all — the only resets it offers are a factory reset and formatting the card. I cover that button sequence in my GoPro reset guide.

HERO6 Black

With the HERO6 Black, the camera will generate a new password for you–you can’t just make up your own.

To reset the HERO6 Black’s wifi password, use the back screen menu to go to:

Settings > Connections > Reset Connections

You’ll then be prompted for confirmation, and it will reset them and do a quick soft reboot with a message flashing up on screen that All Connections Reset.

There are a couple of things to note about the process. Firstly, it resets all your wireless connections, including wifi to the mobile app as well as remote controls. Secondly, it doesn’t automatically tell you what the new wifi credentials are. To find the current camera name on the network and its wifi password, go to:

Settings > Connections > Name & Password

That tells you the Camera Name, which is what you’re looking for from the mobile app. It will be something like GP23650796, for example. The password will be something along the lines of cycle5906 or surf0663.

Another way to display them is to use the camera’s menu to connect to the GoPro Quik app. The camera name and password will show on screen during that process.

HERO5 Black / HERO (2018)

The HERO5 Black is another of the models that doesn’t allow you to assign your own custom device name or wifi password. They’re generated automatically by the camera.

To reset the HERO5 Black’s wifi password, swipe down on the back screen and go to:

Connect > Reset Connections

You’ll then be prompted for confirmation, and it will reset them and do a quick soft reboot with a message flashing up on screen that All Connections Reset.

This resets all your wireless connections, including wifi to the mobile app as well as remote controls.

And it doesn’t automatically tell you what the new wifi credentials are. To find the current camera name on the network and its wifi password, go to:

Connect > Name & Password

That tells you the Camera Name, which is what you’re looking for from the mobile app. It will be something like GP24550796, for example. The password will be something along the lines of cycle2763 or surf0663 or climb0724.

Another way to display them is to use the camera’s menu to connect to the GoPro Quik app. The camera name and password will show on screen during that process.

HERO5 Session

The Session models, which all have the smaller, cube-like shape, don’t have the same on-camera menu system as the larger models. So you have to use a combination of the camera’s two buttons and the small screen on top.

To reset the HERO5 Session’s network ID and wifi password:

1. Press the Menu button (the small rectangular button on the bottom of the back panel) to turn on the small screen on top of the camera.
2. Keep pressing the Menu button to scroll through the options until you get to the one for Connection Settings.
3. Press the Shutter button (large button with red circle) to drill down into the Connection Settings.
4. Press the Menu button again until you get to Reset Connection.
5. Press the Shutter button. You’ll be prompted with a “Reset All?” query. You need to move the white cursor highlight from No to Yes. Do that by pressing the Menu button once and then press the Shutter button to select.

To look up the HERO5 Session’s network ID and wifi password:

1. Press the Menu button (the small rectangular button on the bottom of the back panel) to turn on the small screen on top of the camera.
2. Keep pressing the Menu button to scroll through the options until you get to the one for Connection Settings.
3. Press the Shutter button (large button with red circle) to drill down into the Connection Settings.
4. Press the Menu button again until you get to Camera Info.
5. Press the Shutter button. You’ll then have the camera’s network ID (top line) and wifi password (bottom line)displayed on the screen.

HERO4 Black

The HERO4 Black is the last of the larger-style GoPros that doesn’t have a built-in touchscreen on the back (you can add one as an optional accessory). So to change the wifi password on the HERO4 Black you’ll need to use a combination of the on-camera buttons and the small screen on the front.

The HERO4 Black does things a little differently to newer models. Resetting takes the password back to a default, goprohero, rather than generating a random one. You do have the option of assigning your own device name and wifi password, but not right away in the camera.

To reset the password, go to:

Setup > Camera Reset > Reset Wi-Fi

That will reset it back to the default wifi password of goprohero .

You then connect with mobile app to assign a custom password and device name.

Things worth knowing

If you happen to need to find your GoPro’s MAC address (you probably don’t, unless you’re doing something quite technical with a network setup), I have a separate guide on that.

And it’s worth separating two things that get mixed up. The wifi password on this page is the camera’s own — it exists only so your phone or a remote can connect to the camera directly. If what you’ve lost is the login for your GoPro account, the one the Quik app and your subscription use, nothing on this page will help: you reset that from the sign-in page at gopro.com.
