Here are some practical examples of the zoom range of the Sony E 10-20mm f/4 PZ G wide-angle zoom lens.

This is a lens designed for Sony’s cropped APS-C sensor Alpha cameras, such as the a6### series. In this case, I took all of these on the Sony a6700.

On the APS-C sensor cameras, the 35mm equivalent focal lengths are 15mm to 30mm. Both ends of the zoom range are comfortably within the typical definition of wide-angle, but the zoomed out end, at 15mm, is what is sometimes referred to as ultra-wide-angle.

Put in a more direct way, it has an effective angle of view of 109° when fully zoomed out and 70° when fully zoomed in.

So what do those numbers look like in visual terms? Is it a good fit for the type of wide-angle photos you want to take?

Here are some real-world examples (all shot on a Sony a6700).

This lens uses a motorized zoom. Rather than rotating a zoom ring, as most zoom lenses do, this lens has a slider. Slide toward the T (for telephoto) to zoom in and the W (for wide) to zoom out. The effect is more like a compact camera that uses a rocker switch on the camera for zoom. Photo by David Coleman / Have Camera Will Travel

David Coleman

I take photos for a living. Now based in Washington, D.C., I have spent the last 30+ years shooting across seven continents — from underwater environments to mountain peaks. My images and time-lapses have appeared in major newspapers, magazines, museums, professional sports stadiums, and even on massive architectural scrims covering world-famous buildings.

I started this site in 2009 to field-test gear, share problem-solving solutions, and share what I've learned in shooting around the world. I only review gear and services I have personally used. No armchair opinions — just real-world experience. Because, for me, the fun is in the making of the photo.
