Here’s a collection of images shot with the Sony a7R IV full-frame mirrorless camera under different lighting conditions and with different settings to give a sense of how it performs in real-world shooting.
Review and sample images of the Sony a7R IV: the 61MP full-frame resolution king of its day — what all those pixels buy you in practice, and where the files get demanding.
Sony has recently released the latest flagship camera in their Alpha lineup: the a7R IV. It’s a full-frame mirrorless camera with a 61MP sensor. There’s in-camera sensor stabilization, an ISO range from 50 through 102400 (the native ISO range is 100 to 32000), and a 567-point phase-detection autofocus system. It takes two UHS-II SD cards and has a more moisture- and dust-resistant built than its predecessors.
I’ve posted a detailed hands-on review of the a7R IV separately. The objective here is to share a collection of images shot under different lighting conditions and with different settings to give a sense of how it performs in real-world shooting.
Most of these were shot in RAW (14-bit uncompressed). They were processed in Lightroom, but I haven’t applied any noise reduction or lens corrections.

Buy used
With newer models out now, there’s a healthy supply of a7R IV’s on the used market. Some good places to look are:
I take photos for a living. Now based in Washington, D.C., I have spent the last 30+ years shooting across seven continents — from underwater environments to mountain peaks. My images and time-lapses have appeared in major newspapers, magazines, museums, professional sports stadiums, and even on massive architectural scrims covering world-famous buildings.
I started this site in 2009 to field-test gear, share problem-solving solutions, and share what I've learned in shooting around the world. I only review gear and services I have personally used. No armchair opinions — just real-world experience. Because, for me, the fun is in the making of the photo.
